What is Cyber Bullying

Bullying can take on many forms: verbal, physical and socialand can happen at many places: playgrounds, hallways andmore. Cyberbullying is simply another “place” for bullying to take place.

We define cyberbullying as the use of technology to verbally, socially or psychologically bully.

Cyber bullying can happen in many different “places” such as: cell phones, text messaging, e-mails, websites, video, blogs and any other electronic communication.

Cyberbullying can be as or more hurtful to victims as “real life” Bullying, as on-line attacks are usually very vicious.

Cyber bullies sometimes, but not always, know their victims in real life.

Cyber victimization has been shown to cause:

  • Poor self-esteem
  • Emotional spirals
  • Repeated school absences
  • Depression
  • Even suicide

Cyber-bullying is not limited to a time and space as “real life” bullying is, the victim is constantly exposed to it and there is often no escape, making it so much more damaging to victims.
